two was kinda confusing. also, was the town you grew up always so violent/dangerous?

Always. I was too naive to see it as a kid, but it's always been bad, however with the strange happenings that have been happening lately, I don't think so anymore.

As for two. To summarize. Good Deeds are rewarded in ways that are more than mere material. For example, let's say you lend some small change to a friend, trusting them to pay you back. Now you expect the person to pay the equal amount of money that they owe you. Only to find out that whatever change you gave your friend, contributed to a lottery ticket or a contest won, where the prize makes the change you were expecting look like peanuts in comparison and said friend happens to want to share said prize with the friend that helped him out before. It's not the prize itself, but the person that gives it to you. It comes from the heart, because they're thinking of you.

In terms of whether or not you're doing the right thing, trust your gut, your close circle, but don't give a crap what outsiders of that circle think. It may be risky sometimes, but you may often end up being right.
